Inside the GROWER 240–440 HP Tractors

A 400-horsepower engine is only as useful as the systems that carry its power into the soil. Here is what that means in practice, using GROWER’s six-model high-horsepower lineup as a case study.

Ask most farmers what makes a big tractor “big” and the first answer is usually horsepower. It is the number on the hood, the figure quoted across the dealer’s desk and the line that separates one class of machine from the next. Anyone who has spent a season behind a wide tillage tool, however, knows that the headline number tells only part of the story.

A tractor rated at 400 hp represents potential work. Whether that potential reaches the ground depends on how the engine responds under load, how the transmission matches speed to the job, how the tires grip, how much the machine weighs and how its PTO and hydraulics feed the implement behind it. As horsepower rises, every one of those systems has to scale with it.

So what does it actually take to operate a tractor between 240 and 440 hp? This article works through that question from the ground up. It then uses the GROWER 240–440 HP tractors — the GT 2404, GT 2804, GT 3004, GT 3604, GT 4004 and GT 4404 — as a practical example of how one manufacturer has scaled those systems across a high-horsepower lineup. All GROWER specifications quoted here are taken from the manufacturer’s official 240–440 HP range page.

What Does 240–440 HP Mean in Agriculture?

Horsepower describes how quickly an engine can do work. In the field, that translates into how large an implement a tractor can pull, how fast it can pull it and how much mechanical power it can send to a driven machine.

Tractors between 240 and 440 hp sit in the upper tier of farm tractors. They are rarely bought for mowing, loading or small-plot work. They tend to appear on large-scale farms and with agricultural contractors, where acres per hour matter and the window to finish tillage or planting is short.

Two power figures are worth separating. Engine rated power is what the engine produces at a specified speed. PTO power is what actually reaches the power take-off shaft after losses through the drivetrain, so it is always the more conservative figure for driven implements. GROWER publishes both. The GT 2404, for example, is listed at 237.36 hp of engine rated power and 201.76 hp at the PTO.

Rated speed matters too. It is the engine rpm at which the rated power is measured. The three smaller GROWER models are rated at 2,200 rpm and the three larger ones at 2,100 rpm.

GROWER – GT 3004

Horsepower, Torque and Traction: What Is the Difference?

The three terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things.

Torque is twisting force — how hard the engine turns the crankshaft. Horsepower is torque multiplied by speed — how fast the engine can keep delivering that force. A useful way to picture it: torque is how hard you push a loaded cart; horsepower is how quickly you can keep pushing it.

Torque becomes critical when conditions change mid-pass. When a tillage tool hits a heavier patch of soil, engine speed drops. An engine that holds its torque as rpm falls can pull through without an immediate downshift. GROWER’s range page does not publish torque figures for these models, so buyers who want to compare torque characteristics should request that data from a dealer.

Traction is the tractor’s ability to turn wheel rotation into forward pull. It is limited not by the engine but by the grip between tires and soil, which depends on weight, tire size and ground conditions. A tractor can have ample horsepower and still spin its wheels in wet ground.

GROWER publishes a maximum traction force for each model, ranging from 56.96 kN (12,805.68 lbf) on the GT 2404 to 141 kN (31,687 lbf) on the three largest models. That figure describes pulling capability, which is a separate question from engine output.

Why High-Horsepower Tractors Are Used for Large Implements

Field productivity is largely a function of working width and travel speed. A wider implement, a deeper working depth or a faster pace all raise the draft force needed to pull the tool. More pull at a given speed requires more power. That simple relationship explains why high-horsepower agricultural tractors are commonly associated with:

Heavy and deep tillage, including subsoiling and large disc harrows

Large-scale seedbed preparation across extensive acreage

High-capacity planting with wide toolbars

Heavy-duty PTO applications that demand sustained mechanical power

Agricultural contracting, where one tractor may run many different implements

Large transport operations with heavy trailers

These are typical applications for the power class, not an official GROWER compatibility list. Whether a specific implement suits a specific tractor depends on the implement maker’s power and hitch requirements, soil type, terrain, ballast and tractor configuration. Those details should be confirmed with both manufacturers before purchase.

Power is not everything

It is tempting to shop for tractors by horsepower alone. In practice, field performance comes from a chain of systems working together: engine power and torque, a transmission that keeps the engine in its useful range, traction to put force on the ground, weight for stability and grip, hydraulics and PTO to run the implement, and a hitch rated for the load.

A weak link anywhere in that chain limits the whole machine. An engine with reserve power is of little use if the tires slip, if the hitch cannot carry the implement or if the hydraulic system cannot supply enough remote circuits. The rest of this article looks at each link in turn.

Inside the GROWER 240–440 HP Range

The 240–440 HP range is the high-power end of GROWER Tractor’s lineup, which on the company’s website steps up from a 25–50 HP range through to this class. GROWER positions these heavy-duty tractors for extensive farming, agricultural contractors and high-demand field services.

Several features are common to all six models. Each is four-wheel drive (4WD / 4×4) and uses a GROWER-branded inline six-cylinder engine that is water-cooled, four-stroke, direct injection, turbocharged and intercooled. All have a rear-mounted independent PTO offered in 760/850 or 540/1000 rpm configurations, and all list a maximum forward speed of 36 km/h (22.3 mph).

Beyond that, the range is best understood as three platforms. The GT 2404 stands alone as the lightest model. The GT 2804 and GT 3004 share a mid-size chassis. The GT 3604, GT 4004 and GT 4404 share the largest chassis.

Modelo

Rated power (hp / kW)

Velocidad nominal (rpm)

Displacement (L)

Gears (F + R)

PTO power (hp)

Min. operating weight with cab (kg / lb)

Rear hitch

GT 2404

237.36 / 177

2,200

9.7

18 + 9

201.76

7,750 / 17,086 (2 rear tires)

Category III

GT 2804

280 / 206

2,200

9.7

27 + 9

228

11,308 / 24,930

Category III (4N/3 optional)

GT 3004

300 / 221

2,200

9.7

24 + 12

228

11,308 / 24,930

Category III (4N/3 optional)

GT 3604

360 / 265

2,100

9.41

24 + 12

350–435

18,630 / 41,060

Category IV

GT 4004

400 / 299

2,100

9.41

24 + 12

350–435

18,630 / 41,060

Category IV

GT 4404

440 / 323.5

2,100

16.35

24 + 12

350–435

18,630 / 41,060

Category IV

Source: GROWER 240–440 HP range specifications. Power passes through an 18-forward, 9-reverse gearbox. PTO output is 201.76 hp through a 21-spline involute shaft.

Hydraulics include three pairs of outlets, with height control and float control. GROWER lists 42.28 kN (9,504.92 lbf) of maximum lifting force and 56.96 kN (12,805.68 lbf) of maximum traction force. The fuel tank holds 512 L (135 gal).

The GT 2404 runs 16.9–28 front and 20.8–38 rear tires and is offered with two or four rear tires; the dual setup widens the tractor from 2,470 mm to 3,465 mm. Steering is fully hydraulic on the front wheels, and optional ballast reaches 1,120 kg at the front and 360 kg at the rear. As the lightest and most compact model, it represents the entry point for operations moving into the 240 hp class.

GROWER – GT 2404

GROWER GT 2804 — 280 hp

The GT 2804 moves to a larger, heavier chassis. Its GE-LD2804 engine shares the 9.7-liter displacement but is rated at 280 hp (206 kW). The transmission offers 27 forward and 9 reverse gears, the most forward ratios in the range. Finer gear steps help operators match ground speed precisely to the implement and conditions.

PTO power is 228 hp through a 1-3/4-inch, 20-spline shaft. The hydraulic system steps up to four pairs of outlets and Electronic Draft Control with a load detection system. The GT 4404 is the high-power end of GROWER’s tractor lineup.

GROWER – GT 4404

PTO and Hydraulics: Turning Power Into Work

Pulling an implement is only one way a tractor does work. Many modern implements also need to be driven or controlled, and that is where the PTO and hydraulic systems come in.

The power take-off

The PTO is a splined shaft, usually at the rear, that transfers engine power mechanically to a driven implement. PTO speeds are standardized so that shafts and implements match; 540 and 1000 rpm are the most familiar. An independent PTO can be engaged or stopped separately from the tractor’s travel clutch, so the implement keeps turning when the tractor slows or stops.

All six GROWER models have a rear-mounted independent PTO in 760/850 or 540/1000 rpm configurations. Shaft specifications differ: 21 involute splines on the GT 2404, and a 1-3/4-inch, 20-spline shaft on the other five, described as heavy-duty 1000 rpm on the three largest models.

Hydraulic outlets and draft control

Hydraulic outlets — also called remotes or selective control valves (SCVs) — supply oil to cylinders and motors on the implement. They fold wings, raise markers and adjust working depth. The more complex the implement, the more independent circuits it may need. GROWER’s outlet count rises with the platforms: three pairs on the GT 2404, four pairs on the GT 2804 and GT 3004, and six electronic SCVs on the GT 3604, GT 4004 and GT 4404.

Draft control adjusts the three-point hitch automatically to keep pulling force and working depth consistent as soil conditions vary. Here too, the specification progresses. The GT 2404 lists height and float control. The mid-size models add Electronic Draft Control with load detection, and the largest models use Electronic Draft Control with draft force sensors.

Three-point hitch and lifting force

The three-point hitch carries mounted implements, and its category defines pin sizes and dimensions for progressively heavier equipment. The GT 2404 uses Category III, the GT 2804 and GT 3004 use Category III with a Category 4N/3 option, and the three largest models use Category IV. Maximum lifting force indicates how much load the hitch can raise, which is a key check when pairing heavy mounted tools.

Traction: Getting Power to the Ground

Every horsepower that does not become forward pull is lost as heat, tire wear and wasted fuel. That is why traction becomes more important, not less, as tractors grow more powerful.

Four-wheel drive sends power to both axles, spreading the pulling load across more tire surface. All six GROWER 240–440 HP models are 4WD / 4×4.

Neumáticos define the contact patch between tractor and soil. Larger, wider tires — or dual rear tires — spread weight over more area, improving grip and reducing ground pressure. GROWER offers dual rear tires on the GT 2404, and the three largest models are specified with double rear tires.

Ballast and weight distribution determine how firmly the tires press into the ground. Too little weight and the wheels slip; too much and the tractor compacts the soil and burns fuel carrying unnecessary mass. The right setting depends on the implement and the job. GROWER lists optional front and rear ballast for every model, from up to 1,120 kg front and 360 kg rear on the GT 2404 to up to 800 kg front and 1,000 kg rear on the largest models.

Soil and ground conditions change everything. Dry, firm ground gives good grip. Wet clay or loose sand can reduce it sharply. Some wheel slip is normal under heavy draft, but excessive slip signals that power is not being transferred efficiently. Operators typically adjust ballast, tire pressure or working depth in response.

The weight progression across the GROWER range — from 7,750 kg to 11,308 kg to 18,630 kg — reflects the need to match mass to engine output. That is also why maximum traction force rises in steps across the three platforms.

Operator Control and Comfort

High-horsepower tractors are expensive to own, so they are usually expected to work long days during planting and tillage windows. The operator becomes part of the productivity equation. Fatigue affects precision, reaction time and safety, particularly when running wide implements across large fields.

GROWER describes the cabin across the 240–440 HP range as spacious and ergonomic, designed for a comfortable working environment during long operating hours. The company highlights good visibility, intuitive controls and integrated technologies intended to help operators maintain control and reduce fatigue.

Steering is one area where the models clearly differ. The GT 2404 uses full hydraulic steering on the front wheels. The GT 2804 and GT 3004 have power-assisted steering with a closed-center system and electronic assistance. The three largest models use electro-hydraulic steering with advanced electronic assistance — relevant on machines with a 3,911 mm wheelbase and an operating weight above 18 tonnes.

The range page does not itemize features such as seat type, climate control, lighting packages or cab noise levels. Buyers for whom those details matter should consult the GROWER catalog or a dealer.

A Competitive Global Tractor Market

The high-horsepower segment is served by many established international manufacturers. Farmers and contractors shopping in this class can compare machines from Case IH, New Holland Agriculture, John Deere, Massey Ferguson, Valtra, Kubota y DEUTZ-FAHR, among others.

Each manufacturer structures its lineup, horsepower classes and configurations differently. The right choice for a given operation depends on acreage, soil, implement fleet, dealer support, service access and budget, rather than on any single specification.

For buyers, the practical approach is to define the work first — implement widths, hitch categories, PTO and hydraulic requirements — and then compare how each tractor’s verified specifications meet those needs.

GROWER Tractor in the United States

GROWER Tractor is headquartered in Florida and Texas, USA. From that base, the company offers a lineup that runs from compact tractors to the high-horsepower models covered here, alongside harvesting equipment and implements.

The GROWER website also lists dealer, parts and service, financing and rental channels, plus a downloadable product catalog.
